Contraindications for self-hypnosis

Being in trance is a completely natural state of mind – for most clients, it is extremely beneficial. However, there are some possible contraindications, and patients who fall into these categories should not be referred for hypnosis sessions nor should they practice self-hypnosis.

  • Epilepsy

  • Serious/current heart condition

  • Cardiovascular diseases (cardiac insufficiency)

  • Cardiac infarction or stroke, which happened in the last weeks

  • Thrombosis

  • Disorders of central nervous system (e.g. advanced Morbus Parkinson)

  • Blood pressure (extremely high or low)

  • Depression

  • Elderly or frail

  • Borderline personality disorder

  • Psychosis (delusions, hallucinations, mood disturbance, bizarre behavior)

  • Pregnancy

  • Medication, dependent on medication involved

  • Persistent alcohol or drug abuse

Under certain circumstances, the following areas can influence being in trance and thus any kind of hypnosis session or self-hypnosis.

  • Severe exhaustion / tiredness

  • Hormonal disorders (e.g. thyroid disease)

  • Very low blood pressure

  • Use of certain medications
